Detroit

For much of recent memory, Detroit is another of those cities where the rail transit has consisted of one of those silly little downtown people movers. While a tram has connected downtown to the Amtrak station since 2017, there is still not a lot for a city of its size. The proposed system takes some optimistic additions, since despite the Qline tram, the downtown is still relatively isolated from the surrounding rail system. I've added two spurs to the people-mover: one to connect to the long-abandoned Michigan Central station and the other to a new terminal at Eastern Market.

Another challenge with the Detroit region is that it sits at the border of another country. This proposal assumes that customs for passengers has been worked out and commuter trains can freely travel to Canada.

Lines

  • Red: 30 miles, 14 stations
  • Orange: 34 miles, 15 stations
  • Yellow:
    • Wixom: 46 miles, 21 stations
    • Russel Woods: 24 miles, 15 stations
  • Purple:
    • Plymouth: 33 miles, 13 stations
    • Ann Arbor: 46 miles, 14 stations
  • Cyan: 16 miles, 10 miles
  • Blue:
    • Bellavue: 23 miles, 8 miles
    • Flatrock: 22 miles, 11 stations
    • Milward Park: 11 miles, 7 stations
    • Rockwood: 23 miles, 11 stations

To maintain scale, I've split out the downtown connection lines into a separate map.

Jacksonville

Our third venture to Florida takes us far to the north of the state. Jacksonville is the Florida's oldest city, and due to consolidated boundaries, its "largest" (though by no means its largest metro area). Its current rail service consists of a peripheral Amtrak station and small "people-mover" system in the downtown area. This proposed system adds 4 new rail lines and expands one of the people-mover lines to connect at two new interchanges.

Lines

  • Cyan people-mover:  2 miles, 6 stations
  • Blue people-mover: 4 miles, 9 stations (4 new)
  • Purple: 28 miles, 19 stations
  • Red: 32 miles, 16 stations
  • Orange: 9 miles, 7 stations
  • Green: 10 miles, 7 stations

This four-line system provides transit to Iowa's capitol and largest city and connects it to the college town of Ames to the North.

  • Purple: 21 miles, 12 stations
  • Green: 60 miles, 16 stations
  • Red: 36 miles, 17 stations
  • Cyan: 14 miles, 8 stations

Phoenix

Sprawling Phoenix has something of a love-hate relationship with transit: it's sole light rail system has exceeded ridership expectations, yet dedicated opponents are are working hard to stop its expansion. This proposal adds 3 new routes on dedicated rail rights-of-way, adding an interchange with the airport shuttle system.

  • Orange (Valley Metro Rail): 20 miles, 28 stations
  • Yellow: 19 miles, 13 stations
  • Green: 57 miles, 24 stations
  • Blue: 56 miles, 30 stations

I've also found a great new resource to produce transit maps in MetroMapMaker.
